Mayor Fenty meets Green Summer participantsMayor's Green Summer Job Corps
 
The Mayor’s Green Summer Job Corps engages District youth by providing them with substantive green-collar work. Participants receive hands-on experience and educational programming that introduces them to environmental issues and careers. Green Summer projects also have measurable sustainability benefits for all District communities. 

 
 
 
Green Summer 2009
  • Green Summer will take place from June 18-August 21, 2009.
  • Green Summer is a project of the District Department of the Environment (DDOE).
  • Will employ 800 District youth through the Summer Youth Employment Program.
  • Youth will select one of four topic areas to work in: Energy, Watersheds, Parks, and Trees.
  • Green Summer will also hire up to 120 Team Leaders and Managers as supervisors.
  • Youth will receive field-based training for their specific project, as well as classroom environmental education. 
  • Projects will be provided through collaboration among DDOE, other District agencies, non-profit community groups and private enterprise. 
Green SummerExamples of Green Summer Projects
  • Invasive plant removal at Kingman Island
  • Improvements to Marvin Gaye Park (Ward 7) and Oxon Run Park (Ward 8)
  • Tree maintenance and mulching
  • Energy audits of District school buildings
  • Maintenance of schoolyard greening sites
  • Community outreach and surveys
How to Apply
 
If you’re between the ages of 14 and 21, you’re eligible for Green Summer! First, register for the District’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Once you register with the general SYEP, select “Green Summer” as your preferred employment option.
